The Kangaroo Mother Care Method: A Vital Remedy for Fragile Newborns in Madagascar

The ‘Kangaroo Mother Care’ method is so much more than a mere care approach for premature or low birth-weight babies. It stands as a crucial pillar for Compassion Madagascar, addressing an urgent need in a country where neonatal mortality remains a major challenge. Alarming data sheds light on the pressing necessity to support this life-saving initiative.

Context and Challenges:
  • Alarming mortality rates: In 2013, the neonatal mortality rate in Madagascar was 26 per 1,000 live births, significantly surpassing the Sustainable Development Goals’ target of 12 per 1,000 by 2030.

  • Vulnerability of premature babies: With a preterm birth rate of 14% and 16% of babies born with low birth weight, these children begin life with heightened risks of complications and death.
